Our story

Off the Map Expeditions is different.   Even the way we started is different.

Back in the mid 1990's, we were individual adventure travelers, probably not too different from you, on leave from corporate jobs, doing the standard treks in South America and Southeast Asia.   Each trip was a bit more out there than the last.   At a certain point, we upped the ante a bit and started sneaking into places we definitely shouldn't have been.   In the process it changed our conception of what travel can be.

In the Nepal-Tibet border regions, we explored closed areas like Nar-Phu, that weren't even in the obscure guidebooks.   We found people who were living literally hundreds of years in the past.  We also found that it didn't take much to bring an extra porter or two along carrying supplies for local schools that had no books, pens, or paper.

Along the way, we realized that many adventure travelers are looking for the kind of adventure we can provide, so we started Off The Map Expditions.

So, yes, we've dialed things back a bit now.  Now we do things by the book, paying for permits and working with governments in a more constructive way.  We've built a network of elite U.S.-based guides that we pair up with local in-country professional guides and staff on each trip.   But we haven't sold out. Just think of us as an adventure travel company that still thinks like adventure travelers.
